Get unstuck on investing in good branding
Tell me.. on a scale of one to 10, how much does this scenario match up with how you’re feeling…
You have a business (or service) doing something you care deeply about. It’s new, it’s been around a while… either way, it’s not totally commanding the attention you wish it would. Maybe it’s in a crowded market, with sharp competitors. Maybe it’s not visible in the right places. Maybe you feel like you can’t focus on investing in your business until it’s in a better financial position. Either way, you’re feeling a little unmotivated, unfocused and generally down on your prospects.
It’s a familiar feeling to many – myself included. And whether or not we can identify branding as a potential unlock, the idea of getting started with branding work can just feel like a bit much. This month at Burtch Designs, we’re bringing the insider info – and the motivation.
LET’S BREAK DOWN SOME OF THESE STUCK POINTS AND SOME FIRST STEPS PAST THEM.
I won’t skip past cost – it’s one of the most common objections. Small business owners may be hesitant to spend money on design and branding services, particularly if they are just starting out or have limited funds. If your business launch or maintenance plan doesn’t include enough for marketing, it’s time to take a second look. That’s because custom branding is literally your front door in a sea of many, many others. Give it a coat of paint that will pop off.
Logo, web design and branding work doesn’t feel super necessary. What’s the return on investment going to look like? What makes a custom logo different from using something stock – or not having one at all? Your business’ brand appearance makes you memorable, explains what you offer and can create trust and understanding. Bring. In. The. Customers.
What time will this take, and where will you find it? Every minute is precious when you’re running a business. What will focusing on branding work displace from your every day, and will it be worth it? See ROI question above. See also: it’s not only you, and it doesn't have to be a major time suck. I’m here to help!
Design and branding isn’t quite your forte, or it won’t match what you have in mind. If the idea that you don't “speak design,” don’t know what you want or might not like the final product is holding you back… that doesn’t surprise me. Feeling that way makes a heck of a lot of sense. Put your effort into finding the right designer (check out my blog post about that!), and the rest will follow. I believe it, and you should, too!
