How to plan your best brand shoot

Do you ever come across someone’s website or Instagram feed and think “OH, that’s good!” It feels cohesive, with images that have similar tones and color palettes and that usually “match” from website to Instagram. They also probably invested in brand photography. I personally invested in brand photography shortly after designing my business’ logo and website, so I knew what kind of shots I wanted and had my brand color palette in mind. I didn’t have any current headshots, and I knew pulling free images from Unsplash wouldn’t take me far enough (or make me feel legit enough).

Here are some key tips for a successful brand shoot:

  • Cast a vision with a mood board. Plan and know the overall vibe and vision you’re going for. Is it luxurious? Is it boho? Make a board showing outfit inspiration and the shots you want to get for your brand (ie. you on the computer, holding your cell, working with someone or just looking badass in front of a desk). Share it with your photographer — this can really help them see the overall vision you’re going for.

  • Make a shot list. Bringing a shot list to your brand shoot will help provide a visual reminder of poses and shots you want to get. Consider where you want to use these images — website, social media, email, printed pieces – and make sure you get shots that best fit the sizes, shapes and tones of those spaces.

  • Select 2-3 outfits. Plan your outfits ahead of time. Pick clothes that you feel confident and beautiful in (obviously)! If your photographer lets you, I recommend having a few outfits to change into. And bring props! Not only are props fun, but they make it easier to pose (you’ll actually know what to do with your hands, haha). It’s also fun to bring things from your home office or work space to help it feel more real.

  • Be yourself! Try not to be nervous. Relax, put on some of your favorite jams (mine is almost always a Beyonce playlist) and have fun! Your photographer can help guide you through poses and let you know what looks good.
